UAV & Drone Mapping

A guide for UAV and drone-related resources, tools, and policies at Cal Poly

ArcGIS Drone2Map Standard

Download ArcGIS Drone2Map for Academic Use

ArcGIS Drone2Map is a desktop application (Windows OS) used to process UAV imagery into orthomosaic and digital surface model elevation layers for use in GIS analysis and visualization. Drone2Map provides an easy-to-use tool that is tightly integrated with the ArcGIS platform, for GIS users to organize, process, and share geospatial layers derived from UAV imagery.

To license ArcGIS Drone2Map, users will need an ArcGIS Online Organizational account, which can be requested here: Join the Cal Poly ArcGIS Online Organization (Cal Poly log-in).

Autodesk Recap Pro & Recap Photo

Download Autodesk Recap Pro for Students

Autodesk ReCap Photo is an extension of Autodesk ReCap Pro made for converting Aerial and Object photographs to 3D models. These 3D models can be exported as images, videos, or models for use in other Autodesk or geospatial applications. ReCap Photo provides cloud-based image processing, where images are uploaded, queued, and processed remotely, with the results returned via download.

Note: The educational license limits projects to 100 images per model for UAV image reconstructions.

Agisoft Metashape (aka Photoscan)

Agisoft Metashape Professional
Discounted Educational License

Agisoft Metashape is a stand-alone software product that performs photogrammetric processing of digital images and generates 3D spatial data to be used in GIS applications, cultural heritage documentation, and visual effects production as well as for indirect measurements of objects of various scales.

A single, floating license of Agisoft Metashape Professional is available for academic use at Cal Poly. This can be used to license Metashape from any workstation connected to the campus network. For more information on connecting to and using the floating license, please contact: lib-gis@calpoly.edu or Dr. Marc Horney, Associate Professor of Rangeland Resource Management in CAFES.

Pix4D

Pix4D Software
Discounted Educational License

'The leading photogrammetry software for professional drone mapping'. Pix4D provides the ability to capture RGB color, thermal or multispectral images, and process these into orthomosaic, point cloud, dem, and other products. Processing can be conducted either on the cloud or local workstation.

For more insight on the application of Pix4D for drone image processing contact Dr. Bo Liu, Assistant Professor in the Bioresources and Agricultural Engineering department in CAFES.
